I recently put together a quick python script that allows you organize your image library by each photo’s date.
I put this together since my wife was working to organize our family photos, but it was a painstaking task as we have thousands of them. Only after I wrote the script did I realize that Picasa already does this for you. However, if you’re anything like me, then you have an easier time manipulating a simple python script than you do learning how to operate a new piece of software.
This is also a nice practical example of reading EXIF data from an image in order to accomplish some other task. Some other useful tags aside from the date taken include geolocation data (this is usually standard in a smart phone, but not in a handheld camera), image orientation, and a slew of other things which would have some practical applications outside of my immediate needs.
